Day of Action
There are moments in time that cause us to pause and reflect on where we we've come from as we look toward the future. United Way of Greater Waterbury has reached such a milestone as we celebrate 75 years of service and the partners and volunteers who have made our success possible.
As part of our year-long celebration, plans are underway by Day of Action co-chairs Lynn-Franklin Henry and Sandra Monteiro for our community's largest Day of Action ever to be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2017.
Our 2017 Day of Action will provide 3 distinct opportunities to participate. We encourage your company to join in one or more of the below:
Our Traditional Stock the Pantry
Supporting United Way's Stock the Pantry food drive helps ensure no one goes hungry this summer. Here's how Stock the Pantry works:
Choose a specific food item/category from the priority wish list:
- Peanut Butter/Jelly
- Mac & Cheese/Tuna
Spread the word to employees to bring in as much of that item as possible between June 1st and June 21st.
On Wednesday June 21st, you will join other local participating companies in dropping off the food donated at United Way's Day of Action event to be held at Naugatuck Valley Community College Allied Health Building parking area, where it will be weighed by Connecticut Food Bank and loaded for delivery.
The Literacy Project
In support of United Way's work to promote early literacy and school readiness in preschool-age children, the Literacy Project will involve a day of reading to children at libraries in the United Way of Greater Waterbury 10-town service area, and Waterbury School Readiness sites.
The Return of the Traditional Day of Caring
United Way will be bringing together partner agencies and volunteers in a classic "Day of Caring" opportunity in the style of years past. Volunteers from local companies will be ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work at partner agencies to help out on any projects our agencies could use an extra hand with.
United Way Day of Action is a worldwide day of volunteering held on June 21st, the longest day of the year. On that day you will be joining thousands of people in more than 300 communities across the world who will be volunteering through United Way to make their community a better place through Day of Action.

Thank you for helping us to make history on June 21st!
