A Message From Our Board Chair

Monday, January 25, 2016

During the holiday season, I often ask myself this question: "How different would our region be if every family could meet their basic needs?" And I often think, "How amazing it would be if every family had access to a hand up - for emergencies, for their future, and for moving forward."

I reflect on these ideas, because thriving families support our local businesses, and make our community stronger. Creating opportunity for these deserving families is the reason United Way, along with dedicated partners and volunteers, does what it does.

As Chairman of the Board of our United Way, I send heartfelt thanks to all those in our 28 partner agencies, 46 local programs and 15 community initiatives - the people who are creating real change in the areas of education, income stability and basic needs. Thanks must also be given to everyone who has made a pledge to the "Hand Up" campaign so far.

As we turn the calendar to 2016, the impact in the past year is powerful - approximately 100,000 people served through United Way of Greater Waterbury funded programs; over 1,300 volunteers who have collectively donated over 9,000 volunteer hours; and 90% of every dollar raised being invested in programs and services that help people in need.

The United Way of Greater Waterbury has once again received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator. Only 21% of the charities rated by Charity Navigator have received at least 2 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that our local organization outperforms most other charities in America. This "exceptional" designation differentiates the United Way of Greater Waterbury from its peers, and demonstrates how trustworthy the organization is.

As we enter the final months of the "Hand Up" campaign, I invite you to consider giving to the United Way - through your workplace campaign, through a direct donation at unitedwaygw.org, by volunteering a few hours, or by spending some time advocating for those in need.

Remember, a flourishing community starts with healthy and secure families. And, your support is not a hand out, it's a hand up. A way to LIVE UNITED.
Happy New Year!
