Disaster Relief

Recovery Funds: UPDATED OCTOBER 16, 2017

As of October 16, the United Way Network has raised more than $59.57 million for mid- and long-term recovery efforts related to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma/Maria and the earthquake in Mexico. This includes money donated to the national funds and to funds set up by local United Ways. More than $49.10 million has been raised for Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts. Almost $9.48 million has been raised for Hurricane Irma/Maria recovery efforts. Almost $682,000 has been raised for Mexico Earthquake recovery efforts. More than $309,000 has been designated for where the money is most needed. (These figures have been rounded.)

Distribution Plans
United Way will soon do an initial distribution from the Harvey and Irma Recovery Funds to the affected United Ways. A disaster distribution formula, which will be reviewed and finalized with the relevant United Way state associations, was designed to consider different factors that reflect the damage sustained by counties in the wake of disasters and residents' ability to afford rebuilding their lives. It has been used successfully to redistribute funds in Florida after Charlie, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne in 2004. It was also used for the 2005 Gulf Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The formula also allows for waves of funding that can be released immediately using available data and later adjusted to account for new damages as they are reported.
