Giving United isn't about charity. It's about creating long-lasting change for the common good. When you give to the United Way of Greater Waterbury, you're building a better tomorrow for all - and there are many ways you can help make a difference.

You Prevent Homelessness

The United Way of Greater Waterbury's Flexible Assistance Fund has helped over 400 households in crisis avoid homelessness since 2011.

Leavenworth Society

The Leavenworth Society of United Way of Greater Waterbury bestows recognition upon those individuals who make especially generous contributions. The Society was founded by United Way in honor of Elisha Leavenworth (1814-1911), a prominent citizen of our local community who believed that human caring is the key to a healthy society.

The Society fosters, promotes and recognizes the vital importance of personal giving at an exceptional level.

The example set by these extraordinary people, in the spirit expressed by Elisha Leavenworth, will have a major impact on the future health of the Greater Waterbury community.

The Leavenworth Society offers its members the opportunity to contribute at five levels of commitment:

Diamond Level - $7,500 to $9,999
Platinum Level - $5,000 to $7,499
Gold Level  - $2,500 to $4,999
Silver Level - $1,500 to $2,499

Tocqueville Society

The Tocqueville Society Major Gifts and Recognition Program, nationally initiated in March of 1984, is designed to deepen and strengthen the understanding, commitment and support of high wealth individuals to their local United Ways. The Society represents French historian Alexis de Tocqueville’s admiration for our country's spirit of voluntary effort for the common good, as well as recognizes this resolute commitment to service on both local and national levels.

Special orders of recognition have been created based on these values and are distinguished by each member’s chosen level of giving:

Membres de la Société - $10,000 to $24,999
Ordre de Liberté - $25,000 to $49,999
Ordre d’Egalité - $50,000 to $74,999
Ordre de Fraternité - $75,000 to $99,999
La Société Nationale - $100,000 to $249,999
Ordre d’Indépendance - $250,000 to $499,999
Ordre de Connaissance - $500,000 to $749,999
Ordre de Prospérité - $750,000 to $999,999
La Table Ronde de Millions de Dollars - $1 million+

Globally, Tocqueville Societies have continued to see growth in a number of ways. Currently, 430 societies raise over $556 million dollars from nearly 27,000 individuals.

There are nearly 500 Million Dollar Roundtable members, in addition to more than 470 families who are members of the Tocqueville Legacy Circle because they have made plans to endow their annual Tocqueville support through a planned gift.

All Tocqueville Society members benefit from:

  • Joining a national network of philanthropic leaders who are engaged locally to create long-lasting, positive changes
  • Partnering with a quality organization and dedicated staff; ensuring that gifts, voice, and time are efficiently invested in local communities to maximize impact
  • The unique position of United Way as one of the world’s premier philanthropic organizations which can be used to convene community business and civic leaders focused on the building blocks of a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job; income that can support a family through retirement; and good health.
  • Local Tocqueville Society leaders along with National Society and Million Dollar Roundtable members are invited to attend national and worldwide gatherings of Tocqueville and Million Dollar Roundtable Members.
